Scotsman Colin Montgomerie caught front-runner Gene Sauers and then defeated him in a 3-hole aggregate playoff to win the 35th U.S. Senior Open at Oak Tree National for a long sought after USGA Championship.<\/p>\n
Montgomerie has played in 71 PGA TOUR majors without a win. He was considered to be one of the best golfers never to have won a major US championship.<\/p>\n
Patience is a necessity for the game of golf<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n Patience is the state of enduring under difficult circumstances; persevering without becoming annoyed or angered in a negative way, especially when faced with long term difficulties.<\/p>\n Montgomerie didn’t always show perseverence and patience. When he was jeered by American golf fans, he responded back unkindly. The fans cheered when he missed a crucial putt late in the final round at the 1997 Open, and he reacted with defiance. The 51-year-old says he has become more patient with age.<\/p>\n You know, I waited 22 years to win over in America,\u201d said Montgomerie. \u201cMy first major was the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach in 1992. I think I\u2019ve matured on the golf course. I\u2019m more patient than I was. I think I felt that in majors when I was contending that I had to play perfect golf, that I had to go out and score 64 \u2013 and you don’t. Pars are usually good enough, especially in USGA events.\u201d<\/p>\n Since turning 50, Montgomerie has now won two majors, after narrowly missing out numerous times on the regular tour.
